History

Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM) is a national public institution and the oldest higher education institution in Mozambique. The institution was established on 21st August 1962 under the name Estudos Gerais Universitários de Moçambique, as per the Decree-Law no. 44530. In 1968, it was elevated to the University status and was then called Universidade de Lourenço Marques. On 1st May 1976, President Samora Moisés Machel formally designated the institution Eduardo Mondlane University, thereby honouring the significant historical contributions of Dr. Eduardo Chivambo Mondlane in Mozambique. In addition, 20 June, the date of his birth, is celebrated as Eduardo Mondlane University Day.

Eduardo Mondlane University has swiftly become a prominent national institution, implementing thus, a policy that ensures equitable access for students from a variety of regions across the country, while also endeavouring to enhance the representation of women within the institution. The institution is a public higher education that is legally recognised and enjoys scientific, pedagogical, administrative and financial autonomy. UEM has played a key role as far as education is concerned, as a matter of fact, numerous generations of young people, who now occupy a wide range of roles and positions across various sectors of society, including government, social services, economics, and the service industry have gone through UEM and their contributions extend beyond national borders, making a significant impact both nationally and internationally.  

The history of UEM is inextricably linked to the history of the country, shaping the process of teaching, research and extension from the very beginning. It has defined professional profiles in terms of training and determined the research lines to be prioritised.

Eduardo Mondlane University is a key player in today’s market economy, with a strong presence in the provinces of Maputo, Gaza, Inhambane and Zambézia. Our reach extends even further, with distance learning programmes available throughout the country and abroad.
