  • Kaya Clinica

Kaya Clínica is a UEM Resource Centre that has been established to define methodologies, techniques and multidisciplinary actions. It encompasses the Faculties of Architecture and Physical Planning, Engineering, Medicine, Law, Arts and Social Sciences and Economics. Collectively, these faculties contribute to generating rights and safe and healthy living conditions in peri-urban areas of Maputo city.

Kaya Clínica’s role is not to provide a low-cost housing, but to assist communities in addressing legal, urban and housing problems that may exist. The provision of such assistance is made through technical support, consultancy services, legal related information, strategy definitions, feasibility studies and the mobilization of resources locally, among others, accordingly. These activities are carried out through a multidisciplinary exercise, with a transformative impact on society, “combining the three dimensions of the university’s social function: teaching, research and university extension – linked together by social commitment”.

The Kaya Clínica initiative constitutes a partnership between Eduardo Mondlane University and the Maputo City Council (CMCM), with the objective of providing a framework for a multidisciplinary response to the extensive range of intervention needs in the city’s peri-urban neighbourhoods.

Objectives

  1. Pursue the course of action, in a continuous basis, to arrange the required documents to obtain DUAT (land use rights) and the training of local authorities.
  2. Carry out energy situation inventory in the neigbourhoods to suggest mechanisms for sustainable use of various energy resources, with a view to making energy access more equitable.
  3. Managing black and rainwater systems;
  4. Micro-projects design for the collection and processing of solid waste (recycling and reuse of waste);
  5. The development of urban planning is of paramount importance in order to guide the opening up of streets and the reorganization of plots. This is essential for the development of engineering projects for the construction of the roads in this simple urbanization.
