The first technology incubator in Mozambique was established at the Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM) in 2002 under the name Mozambique Information and Communication Technology Institute (MICTI), involving 6 projects in its first incubation cycle.
In 2022, under the management of the Eduardo Mondlane University Computer Center (CIUEM), the incubator was required to be transformed into a space that was more in line with the current concept of incubation. To this end, the "Open Space" concept was introduced, resulting in the creation of a larger and more welcoming space for incubatees. To this end, with the support of partners, namely the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) and the Education Information Development Centre (CIES), it was possible to upgrade the physical space and purchase equipment.
In this new concept, each incubation process involves a cycle made up of a package of activities, including (1) Project selection, (2) a period of training, (3) Pre-incubation, 4 (Incubation), (5) Post-incubation.
The first incubation cycle officially began in February 2023, involving female final-year student or recently graduated, as part of the Coding Girls Project: The women of tomorrow in Mozambique’s digital economy”.
Subsequently, the incubator began incubating projects from the Call4Ideas initiative, through the ICT4Dev project: “Training students, teachers and researchers in the ICT sector, research activities and carrying out innovative projects for the social and economic development of the country”, and the Incubator’s activities actually began on September 11, 2023.
