The Yellow House |Casa Amarela

The Yellow House, the building where the National Money Museum has been enshrined since 1981, is the oldest in Maputo city. It was designated a Cultural Monument in 1964 through the (Decree 17.685, of April 8), however, following the independence in 1975 recognized the heritage value (confirmed by Law No. 10/88) of the Yellow House and chose to install the museum there.

Built in 1860, its first owner was an Indian merchant, who sold it in 1873 to the Portuguese Government for 750 pounds sterling. The Yellow House was initially meant to be the residence of the Governor. It was then successively used as the Government Secretariat, the Civil Administration Services Directorate, the 1st Police Station, and various other Colonial Administration bodies.

It has witnessed the changes in the city: Prison – late 18th century; from Village and Municipality, December 9, 1876; and eventually City – November 18, 1887. Its historical importance was recognized and, thus, scaled up, and adapted to suit the new functions as a museum shortly after national independence.
