The Distance Learning Centre, known as CEND, is an organic unit of the Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM) that is dedicated to Distance Learning (DE) initiatives as well as the promotion and coordination of DE activities at faculty level in order to ensure that the different organic teaching units offer quality and relevant distance learning programmes, using sophisticated technologies and appropriate models.
CEND was established through the deliberation 13/CUN/2002, of November the 29th, published in BR, II series, no. 51, of 18/12/02, setting up the legal and institutional conditions to turn UEM into a bi-modal higher education institution, i.e. providing both face-to-face and distance learning. The rules governing the operation of CEND are set out in its regulations approved by Deliberation 7/CUN/2004 of December the 16th, published in BR, II series, no. 9, of March the 1st, 2006.
The first e-learning experience was in 2008, which consisted of a degree in Business Management with the Faculty of Economics, and then a Master’s degree in Agricultural Education with the Faculty of Agronomy and Forestry Engineering.
UEM currently offers four degree programmes:
Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences
